Lot 4780
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.64 g, 1 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Siscia, irregular mint, after 318. H H H H H H HV Laureate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. H H H H / IHI Two Victories standing facing each other and holding shield inscribed with - above •I• over altar. Sharply struck and of lovely style. Minor smoothing, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex VAuctions E-Auction 262, 15 April 2011, 188.

The sunken margins around each letter and parts of the bust on this contemporary imitation would have been raised areas in the dies. This was caused by punching and pressing the engraving tools into the die, rather than cutting and removing metal from it.
